Investors
Could Save Agriprocessors
Posted 05 November 2008
Agriprocessors Inc. CEO Bernard
Feldman confirmed this week that the company is optimistic that talks
with investors interested in buying at least a share of the company
could save the plant from a permanent shutdown.
The conversations have become public as vendors doing business with the
Postville meatpacking plant seek payment of overdue bills and local
plant managers struggle with financial issues that have slowed
production.
Feldman has not identified which outside investors and companies may be
interested in buying interest in the plant, saying he does not want to
jeopardize the future of such discussions.
The U.S. Government has posed fines against the plant and, to date, at
least four companies have filed lawsuits against Agriprocessors,
including a bank based in St. Louis.
Locally, a spokesman for Alliant Energy said the plant has received a
power disconnection notice in response to unpaid bills.
