Volunteers
for Tax Assistance Sought
Posted 09 November 2008
Do you like to help others?
Do you have an interest in numbers or accounting? Do you like to
perform tasks accurately and completely? Iowa State University
Extension and the Northeast Iowa Retired and Senior Volunteer Program
are working together to provide free income tax assistance to the
elderly and those with low to moderate income in Allamakee, Howard and
Winneshiek County.
Volunteers would help prepare basic tax return for individuals in
Cresco, Decorah, Elma, and Waukon. Training, self-study
materials, and software are provided at no cost to volunteers.
“We are very grateful to our dedicated volunteers who make this program
happen!” commented Erin Ludwig, ISU Extension Family Resource
Management Specialist who will serve as site coordinators for the
Allamakee and Howard County Sites.
RSVP Director who works with the Decorah site, Kathy Barloon stated
that the income tax assistance program is one example of the many ways
volunteers are making a difference in their community.
“Clients often complimented the volunteers on their great service as
well as their willingness to explain things that the client did not
understand. It was also very evident that the free service was
important to tax payers who had limited income.” Barloon
further stated that the volunteers themselves found it to be a very
rewarding experience, appreciated the great training and support as
well as the opportunity to utilize their life skills and talents to
give back to their community
Volunteers will receive training and preparation for taking the IRS
test which qualifies them as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant tax
preparer. Once certified, volunteers will begin serving elderly
and low income clients in January of 2009. Volunteers determine
how many hours per week they wish to devote to working with income tax
assistance program but are asked to make a commitment to be available
mid January through April 2009.
