Aid
Available to Displaced Postville Workers
Posted 09 November 2008
People who recently lost their jobs
at Agriprocessors Inc. had the opportunity to meet this past week to
learn what help is available to them through government services.
During the meeting, held Thursday evening, Nov. 6, employees of Iowa
Workforce Development, the Department of Human Services and Northeast
Iowa Community Action Agency took information from about 125 people,
including temporary workers from the Des Moines-based Jacobson
Staffing, to begin matching people with services.
Among services available are unemployment benefits, food stamps,
vocational training, career assessment and employment aid.
Spanish, French, Arabic and Somalian translators were on hand.
Jacobson became the plant's human resources department after a May 12
immigration raid that led to the arrest of 389 people. It pulled out
its 450 employees — more than half the plant's work force — last month.
Local officials say many of the Jacobson employees haven't lived in
Postville long enough to earn enough money to move again to find work.
The goal of the meeting was to find out which services people are
eligible for, so they can later fill out applications at the Upper
Explorerland Regional Planning Commission office in Postville.
