Food,
Shelter Needed for Postville Workers
Posted 15 November 2008
Some Palauans, brought to Postville
for work at the Agriprocessors Inc. kosher meat packing plant, and
other plant employees were transported yesterday, Friday, Nov. 14, to
the Jewel Skate Country Rink in Decorah for emergency shelter
accommodations.
The move was necessary as gas and heat for many former Agriprocessors
employees was shut off Friday at their Postville apartments, rented
from GAL Investments, a group owned by Agriprocessors management.
Locals say the action was an attempt to force families to pay rent and
utility charges.
To compound the problem, many Agriprocessors employees reported not
receiving paychecks on Friday. The lack of compensation coupled with
the disconnection of utilities sent individuals and families out of
Postville to look for employment and better conditions elsewhere.
The Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and other local
volunteers, requested donations of sandwiches, drinks and bedding to be
delivered to the skating rink - now turned to emergency shelter for the
displaced workers.
Donations are no longer needed as local residents stepped forward and
met the former employee's needs.
Emergency housing was needed for former some Agriprocessors employees
from American Samoa and the island of Palau, whose return flight to
home is scheduled for Jan. 1. They had no other place to go.
