Travelers
Beware
as Freezing Rain Heads into Iowa
Posted 20 January
2010
Meteorologists are forecasting one-quarter to one-half inch of ice will
accumulate over much of Iowa in the next 24 hours. That
translates into big trouble for motorists traveling the many roadways
in the Hawkeye State. The Iowa Department of Public Safety,
Division of the Iowa State Patrol advises drivers to take extra
precautions when ice glazes over our roadways.
* Avoid travel whenever possible.
* Reduce speeds to accommodate for lack of control
on ice.
* Increase following distance to 8-10 seconds
between cars.
* Remember, 4 wheel drive doesn't help you on ice.
* Never use cruise control.
* Be particularly careful of bridges and overpasses
where ice accumulates more quickly.
* Heed all travel warnings. Never drive on
closed roads.
* Call 9-1-1 if you are involved in an accident or
put your car in the ditch.
* Never leave your vehicle after an accident.
Wait for assistance to come to you.
“This winter Iowans have done a tremendous job of monitoring the winter
weather, taking the advisories seriously and altering their travel
plans,” said Col. Patrick Hoye. “As a result, our Troopers have
seen a decrease in serious weather related traffic accidents and
fatalities.”
As the ice storm enters the state of Iowa over the next 24 hours,
remember to monitor the Iowa Road Conditions Web Site at www.511ia.org Or, if you don’t
have access to the internet, call 5-1-1 from a touch tone phone.
Winter road condition information is uploaded to both the web site and
phone system regularly by the Iowa State Patrol as Troopers travel
throughout the state, taking note of the changing road conditions. |
